Energy Efficiency for Ships

Global Commitment to a Greener Future

In line with SDG 13, the IMO has implemented mandatory measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping through MARPOL Annex VI. As a Recognized Organization (RO), BKI helps your fleet be compliant, efficient, and competitive.

  • Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)

Energy efficiency standards for new ships ≥ 400 GT, operating at the design stage and during sea trials before publication by the IEEC.

  • Energy Efficiency eXisting ship Index (EEXI)

Implementation of efficiency principles on existing vessels ≥ 400 GT. Including solutions such as SHAPOLI/EPL and the re-issue of the IEEC.

  • Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP)

Parts I, II (IMO DCS), and III (CII): planning, fuel consumption data collection, and continuous performance improvement.

MARPOL Annex VI

Technical Steps: EEDI & EEXI

Focus on ship design & equipment to meet minimum efficiency levels.

For New Ships: EEDI

EEDI is pushing for new, more efficient & low-emission vessels for ≥ 400 GT.

1

Preliminary Verification

EEDI verification at design stage before construction.

2

Final Verification

Survey during sea trial to confirm EEDI value & IEEC issuance.

For Existing Vessels: EEXI

EEDI-like principles apply to vessels operating above 400 GT, ensuring the fleet meets climate standards.

A

Compliance Assessment

Compare Attained vs. Required EEXI; take action if not met.

B

Countermeasures

Implementation of SHAPOLI/EPL or other solutions, with guidance & approval of BKI.

C

Verification & Certification

Verification on the first IAPP survey ≥ 1 Jan 2023, then re-issue IEEC.

Ship Energy Management

Operational Steps: SEEMP, DCS & CII

Management & monitoring of ship operations for continuous performance improvement.

Part I

Foundation & Monitoring

Mandatory since 2013 for all ships ≥ 400 GT. Plans to improve ship energy efficiency.

Part II (IMO DCS)

Data collection

For vessels ≥ 5,000 GT. Annual fuel consumption collection & reporting methodology.

Part III (CII)

Performance & Improvements

Plan to achieve CII (A–E) rating: calculation methodology, 3-year plan, and self-evaluation procedures.

Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII)

Annual A–E ratings based on IMO DCS data: reporting ≤ 3 months; SoC ≤ 5 months; corrective plan if rating E (1 year) or D (3 consecutive years).
