Ambon, November 19, 2025 – PT Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (Persero) (BKI), in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering at Pattimura University (Unpatti), held a Marine Surveyor Training program to strengthen students’ competencies in marine surveying and maritime technical inspection. Conducted at the Unpatti Faculty of Engineering, the training aimed to equip participants with foundational skills aligned with the evolving needs of the maritime sector.
The event was attended by BKI’s Head of Social and Environmental Responsibility Unit, Arif Bijaksana Prawira Negara; Unpatti’s Vice Dean for Student Affairs, Cooperation, and Alumni, Nil Edwin Maitimu, S.T., M.T.; and Marine Engineering Lecturer, Novitha L. Th. Thenu. Their presence underscored the crucial role of academia–industry collaboration in preparing a highly competent maritime workforce.

In his opening remarks, Arif Bijaksana emphasized the growing urgency for engineering students to strengthen their competencies through professional training and certification. He highlighted that today’s industry demands graduates who combine strong academic foundations with practical technical expertise.
Beyond technical proficiency, he also stressed the importance of soft skills such as communication, decision-making, collaboration, and organizational experience. “Industry values character and work ethic just as much as technical skills,” he stated, expressing hope that the training would offer real benefits and pave the way for continued collaboration between BKI and Unpatti.
Vice Dean Nil Edwin Maitimu added that the demand for certified skilled workers continues to rise, particularly for major industrial projects, including those in the Masela Block. He noted that academic qualifications alone are no longer sufficient to meet current industry requirements.
“What matters most today is demonstrated skill,” he emphasized. He expressed confidence that the Marine Surveyor Training would help students meet competency standards and expand their employment opportunities.
Marine Engineering Lecturer Novitha L. Th. Thenu explained that the training is part of the second Indonesia Emas Scholarship program, organized by the IDSurvey Group—a state-owned survey services holding that includes BKI, SUCOFINDO, and Surveyor Indonesia.
Delivered by BKI Academy instructors from various regions, the training brought together twenty participants from three related study programs. The curriculum covered testing, inspection, and certification—the core competencies required of a marine surveyor. Participants also gained additional knowledge on ship construction (hull structure), International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, and other global standards governing the maritime industry.
At the conclusion of the program, each participant received an official certificate from BKI as proof of their professional competency—an important qualification that enhances the competitiveness of Unpatti’s engineering graduates in an increasingly skills-driven job market.
