PT Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (Persero) (BKI) has further strengthened its role as a trusted authority for the survey, verification, and statutory certification of Indonesian-flagged vessels following the signing of a Cooperation Agreement (Perjanjian Kerja Sama/PKS) with the Directorate General of Sea Transportation, Ministry of Transportation.

The agreement was signed on January 12, 2026, at the Ministry of Transportation Headquarters in Jakarta by the Director General of Sea Transportation, Muhammad Masyhud, and BKI President Director, R. Benny Susanto. The cooperation reaffirms the government’s delegation of authority to BKI to conduct inspections, testing, surveys, verification, and statutory certification of Indonesian-flagged ships in accordance with prevailing laws and international standards.
Benny Susanto emphasized BKI’s continued commitment to supporting the government in strengthening shipping safety and improving service quality across the national maritime sector. He expressed confidence that the extension of this cooperation would deliver tangible benefits for the nation, particularly in enhancing vessel safety and ensuring reliable services for all maritime stakeholders.
He also noted that the collaboration is expected to foster stronger communication and synergy among regulators, classification societies, shipowners, shipping companies, and seafarers to build a shipping safety system that is reliable, efficient, and globally competitive.
Meanwhile, Director General Muhammad Masyhud reaffirmed the Ministry of Transportation’s commitment to strengthening national maritime safety governance through professional, transparent, and accountable partnerships. He explained that in 2026, the government officially extended BKI’s mandate as a recognized organization authorized to carry out statutory surveys and certification on behalf of the state for Indonesian-flagged vessels.
Masyhud highlighted BKI’s strategic role in supporting government oversight, particularly for Indonesian ships operating on international routes. He expressed hope that this cooperation would ensure consistent compliance with international safety standards and help maintain Indonesia’s position on the Tokyo MoU White List, thereby strengthening global confidence in the country’s maritime safety regime.
The cooperation is implemented in accordance with Law No. 17 of 2008 on Shipping, which requires vessels of certain types and sizes to be classified by a recognized classification body, and aligns with the implementation of the IMO Recognized Organization (RO) Code as stipulated under Maritime Safety Committee resolutions.
Through this strengthened partnership, BKI and the Directorate General of Sea Transportation reaffirm their shared commitment to enhancing ship quality, safeguarding maritime safety, and supporting the sustainable growth of Indonesia’s shipping industry.
